It's a retirement that is well deserved of course, since he will be 96 years of age by the time you read these words, an age when most people are lucky to be able to get around unaided, let alone fulfil an enormous number of public engagements each year! Prince Philip's retirement will certainly mark a new era for the Royal Family, as younger members of the family increasingly step up to assist the Queen. The Prince of Wales and Duke of Cambridge, his son and grandson, will continue to take on extra duties, as other Royals accompany the Queen on regular engagements. Kensington Palace has already detailed plans for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to move to London later this year, as Prince William leaves his job as a search and rescue pilot in Norfolk to become a full time working Royal. But what of Her Majesty the Queen Now her husband has retired, is she likely to follow suit and pass the throne to her eldest son Prince Charles The answer, all agree, is a definite no. Despite being 91 years old, the monarch will not step back from her public duties and is sticking by what she has previously said, that her role is a job for life'. Her Majesty has always made it clear that abdication is not an option, having spent 65 years on the throne and entered the historical record books in the process. We say thank you, Your Majesty. As you will see from our moving report of her visit to a Manchester hospital this issue, she remains an excellent modern figurehead, and an example of true Royalty at its best.
